Due to heat sensing pits located along the upper jaw, ball pythons can easily find prey in complete darkness. The pits open at different angles which allows the snake to tell what direction warmth is coming from.

Catering at the Zoo

Edventure Academy

Edventure Academy provides a unique opportunity for you and your child to learn more about the animals at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo! Each session is specifically designed for the age group indicated and may include such experiences as a craft, snack, biofact (skulls, fur, feathers, etc.) presentation, zoo tour and an animal encounter or keeper talk.

Sand Boa

A parent or guardian is required to attend preschool sessions with their child; parents are optional for sessions for kids ages 6-10. Class size is limited to ensure that your child has the most educational and fun experience we can offer!

Pre-registration is required for all sessions; a minimum number of registrants is required to run all Edventure
Academy programming.

Fees:

  • Members: $18 per child/one adult pair per session
  • Non-members: $23 per child/one adult pair per session
  • $12 for each additional child or adult (member or non) in the same session

Soaring Raptors

Do you wish that you could glide like an eagle? Or dive as fast as a falcon? Well fly on over to the zoo to learn about these fast feathered creatures! We will meet a bird of prey and learn all about their lifestyles. We may even become birds ourselves!

EdVenture Academy Wild Beginnings

Want to try EdVenture Academy, but your child is too young?  Give the program a try with these programs tailored just for little ones, aged 12 months to 3 years.  Each themed class includes animal biofacts, nature-themed sensory play, a story and an opportunity to see an animal up close!  Young ones will explore with their senses as well as develop language and motor skills in the process during this early learning adventure.  Please note this class occurs entirely in the classroom.  You are welcome to tour the zoo after class as your admission is included with your class fee.

Family Twilight: Dazzling Disguises

Come to the zoo after hours in an animal disguise for a pre-Halloween celebration!  While we are in costume we will be learning about the dazzling disguises and startling surprises animals use to stay alive!  From mammals to birds, amphibians to insects, we'll explore the incredible ways animals camouflage themselves, mimic other animals, and perform visual tricks!  Join us for a tour to unmask these clever creatures and meet one up close!

Family Twilight: Animal Artists

Wild about art? Our animals use their trunks, paws, hooves and brushes to paint like Picasso. Roll up your sleeves, bring a smock and join us as we paint like animals and watch an animal artist create a masterpiece.  Children will walk away with a holiday themed painting perfect for gift giving!

Family Twilight: The Scoop on Poop

Everyone does it, including all the animals at the zoo! Some animals even put poop to good use, like our Humboldt penguins! Come explore the wonders of poop in this stinker of a class!

Consent and Waiver Policy

Every participant under the age of 18 without a parent or legal guardian on the premises during the education program must have a signed consent and waiver form on file with the education department. This form will be kept on file for one (1) year, so you only need to fill it out once. If your child's medical history, including food allergy or activity restrictions changes, please notify the education department to update your file at (315) 435-8511 x8559. Cancellation Policy

If your child is enrolled and you must cancel for any reason, your registration fee is nonrefundable unless a child on the wait list can fill the space. If there is no wait list for the session indicated, we cannot issue a refund. In the event the cancelled slot is filled, a 25% processing fee will be deducted from your refund. We will not issue rainchecks or transfers/credit.
