We can hardly believe our miracle elephant twins, Yaad and Tukada, are turning FOUR YEARS OLD on Saturday, October 24! Join us for a monster mash birthday bash of elephant proportions at the upper Asian Elephant Overlook at NOON to watch the boys and their herd receive special birthday enrichment.

Due to the complexity of elephant ultrasounds and the rarity of elephant twin births (less than 1%), we never anticipated Mali was pregnant with twins. Elephant twin births are rare and dangerous for both the calves and the mother, so you can imagine our surprise when after ten hours of waiting for Mali’s placenta to drop after the birth of a healthy baby boy, a second calf dropped instead. Dubbed our Miracle Twins due to the sheer improbability of their birth, the two growing boys continue to capture the hearts of all who meet them, and have become a fundamental part of our zoo’s history.

With fewer than 50,000 Asian elephants remaining in the wild, our twins represent hope for the survival of their endangered species. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is proud to participate in critical conservation efforts and research to help reverse this negative population trend and save Asian elephants from extinction. By visiting us and other AZA-accredited institutions, you are directly helping to support the conservation of Asian elephants worldwide.
